The Upper Room opened its doors at 21 Edward Street to take in their first youth in March of 2016. Since then, nearly 50 of OUR LOCAL YOUTH have had a safe, caring place to stay when they’ve had nowhere else to go.
Our shelter is geared towards youth aged 16-24 and while most of our guests are young men, we have always been able to accommodate young women in need as well.
The Upper Room is one part of a larger, community collaboration called TAYH (Taking Action on Youth Homelessness. Elgin County YFC/Youth Unlimited, the YWCA, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Family and Children’s Services, the Salvation Army, and 211 have come together to wrap around our youth who are struggling with homelessness and journey with them through this troublesome time in their young lives.
The Upper Room is run by a committed and caring volunteer team from all walks of life on an emergency, on-call basis and we have an urgent need to build that team to make sure no one gets turned away. It is a unique and rewarding experience for each volunteer!
Can you spare 1 or 2 nights a month (or more) to join our team and be on call to support a youth in desperate need?
We are now taking applications to join our volunteer support team.
